Classroom Instruction


The classroom component of our curriculum is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of all facets of the personal training profession; from anatomy, physiology exercise science, nutrition and exercise programming to the business side of the industry.

Our classroom is a professional, but informal environment in which students are encouraged to have fun while they learn. All lectures are projected using PowerPoint software and are available on-line. We also bring in guest lecturers to discuss a wide variety of topics.

Curriculum
  • Mock Training, Program Design and Special Populations
    • The student will learn to design and implement exercise programs for clients based on real-world scenarios and case studies.
    • Special Populations-Health concerns, exercise programming and exercise modifications for clients with special medical issues including:
      • Obesity
      • Diabetes
      • Asthma
      • Pregnancy
      • Musculoskeletal Injuries
      • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Anatomy and Physiology-Knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the human body including:
    • Energy Systems
    • Muscle origin, insertion and action 
    • Body planes, joint ranges of motion and exercise analysis
  • Nutrition
    • Macro and micro nutrients
    • Popular and fad diet myths and realities
    • Nutritional needs related to fitness, performance and health
  • Client Assessment
    • Guidelines for pre-participation health screenings and risk stratification including:
      • Blood Pressure
      • Body Movement Screens
      • Body composition and aerobic capacity testing
      • PAR-Q, Medical Clearance and Client Self-Evaluation Forms
  • Biomechanics-How biomechanics relates to resistance training and physical activity.
  • Band, Pulley and Manual Training-Exercise design using these tools and modalities.
  • Medicine and Stability Ball Training-Exercise design using these tools and modalities.
  • Metabolic Calculations-The utilization of metabolic calculations and their relationship to energy expenditure.
  • Stretching Techniques
    • Hands on manual stretching techniques
    • The science and practical implementation of flexibility training methods
  • Business Development, Insurance/Legal Issues
    • Sales and marketing
    • Career paths in personal training
    • Resume and cover letter writing
    • Building and maintaining a client base
    • Knowledge on developing and protecting a personal training business
  • Aerobic Training-Types, function and guidelines for cardiovascular fitness training programs
  • Sports-specific Training Methods
  • CPR and AED Certifications
